Friday Five : Busybody beauty staples edition

Happy Friday! I can't tell you how good it feels to be clacking away on my keyboard with a new post for Cute and Mundane! It's been a crazy quarter for me --- twelve (or more) hour workdays and six day workweeks do tend to wear on you after a while... and add a new perspective on life's little essentials, beauty and otherwise. With that in mind, I'm sharing my Friday Five list of staples that were worthwhile, despite a 5am start!

1. Coffee, stat
Given the circumstances, I got my hands on the largest set of Starbucks K-cups I could find (hello Costco!). I like to fix my coffee at home, for the sake of efficiency as well as my idiosyncrasies. I like mine with coconut milk (dairy and soy are on my ingredient sensitivity list), as well as a generous helping of organic cane sugar!

2. Perrier, to counteract the coffee
Perrier has become my signature drink, of sorts. You'll rarely see me without one! Staying hydrated was one of my new year's resolutions, however during a busy workday, it can be difficult to remember to sit down and drink a glass. With a lovely green bottle of fizz to look forward to, it's easier to do.

3. Instagram, for a quick beauty fix
Thirty seconds of snapshot surfing can do wonders. I've really come to enjoy Instagram as a way to get a quick beauty fix. I'll admit it's nice to live vicariously through others while my personal routine is on autopilot for the time being! A few of my favorite beauty bloggers on Instagram are Beauty Look Book, Makeup Magpie, Amyppl, Lenallure, and KarenMBB. You can of course find Cute and Mundane there as well!

4. A fast and furious foundation routine
Previously, I was all fingers when it came to foundation application. I've since become a Beauty Blender devotee! It's fast, adds a smooth finish, and doesn't require scrubbing all the extra residue off one's tips afterwards. In terms of product, I'm still loving CHANEL Perfection Lumière for it's long lasting finish.

5. Well groomed brows
... are not to be underestimated! Typically I use a touch of wax as well as tweezers throughout the week. However these past few months I fell behind a bit (in addition to being thwarted by a broken microwave) . The result wasn't terrible, as my brows are relatively fine, like my hair. However, I've realized that it's well worth putting extra time into my arches --- I just feel (and look) more alert.

Thanks so much for reading! I'm so glad you took the time to stop by! I'd love to know --- what are your busybody beauty staples? What are the non-negotiable parts of your beauty routine?

Love, Dovey.

  1. Good to see you back, Dovey! Wow, you're keeping very busy - small wonder you're still putting aside a little time for blogging :) Loved your list of staples, I like browsing Instagram too when I feel I could use some beauty inspiration - or I'm just nosy and like to see what everyone's been up to...

  2. Hi Dovey! Thanks for the link love. :)
I gathered you're very busy but I'm glad to read a new post of yours.
Last year I was just like you, so busy with work and other things, and I found it was difficult even to post monthly. Instagram was much easier and let me stay connected with people not to mention I met many wonderful people there too!
    Have a great weekend! :)

  3. I love Lena's blog. she is so sweet. I get my beauty fixes on the go on instagram too. I think it also is a good round up of what is going on on my fav blogs, because they tend to put their new posts up on instagram.

  4. The non-negotiable products for me are foundation/base products and mascara - that being said, I always wear my eyeshadow so I suppose that would fall under the must-have section of my routine too. Lips aren't always a necessity for me as I always have a gloss in my bag to touch up during the day if need be. I also totally agree with the coffee point - coconut milk sounds like it would go nicely with coffee!

  5. Haiii Dovey *waves* Wow you have REALLY long work hours! Glad to read a new post!

I've never tried coconut milk in my coffee! I usually drink one coffee a day, but I do also drink tea so I guess my caffeine intake isn't all that low. Filling my brows is a MUST for me, since I otherwise have no brow whatsoever!

  6. We always make coffee at home, too, although I'm not against buying a treat when I'm out and about sometimes. I found some cute and tasty syrups from Target that I've been using to dress up coffee at home! :D I think it's their house brand - Archer Farms.

  7. So glad to see you posting again!
I used to be a morning coffee devotee, but I've recently switched to drinking tea instead. Right now my favorites are Ginger Peach and Vanilla Rooibos. As for makeup, some kind of base product and mascara are a must for me. I do like to put on a tinted lip balm (something along the lines of Revlon lip butters) as well for a bit of color, even if I'm in a hurry.

  8. Hi Dovey, this list is spot on. I am all about coffee, quick foundation, brows, blush and mascara. It wakes your face (and you) up fast. I hope work becomes more manageable soon.
