Batiste Dry Shampoo in Original review

I was told that Jenni 'JWoww' Farley is a fan. While I'm not a reality TV junkie, I won't complain if Batiste Dry Shampoo geves me Jersey Shore-like voluminous hair. It took me a while to try a dry shampoo, since I didn't see the need seeing as the chance that I would let my hair go unwashed is slim to none. However, I've found that dry shampoo is perfect for reviving my end-of-the-day kinda oily hair and giving it an extra clean volume boost. It's great when I need a quick refresher before heading out for an evening. Dry shampoo is pretty much a staple product for me now. I was excited to have the chance to try and review Batiste Dry Shampoo in Original. Batiste is a best selling UK dry shampoo brand that's made it's way across the pond to the U.S.

Dry shampoos come in two formulations that I'm aware of: aerosol and powder. This one is in aerosol form. Clean and Classic is the original scent; it smells mildly like air freshener. While I prefer unscented products, this scent isn't too overwhelming and does give hair a clean type of smell. To use Batiste Dry shampoo, shake well and spray about a foot away from your hair. Instead of a continuous spray, I lift up different sections of hair and aim at the roots to get a better distribution where needed. The dry shampoo is white and my hair is quite dark. To avoid patchy white Bellatrix Lestrange type hair (see here), I tousle vigorously until the white has blended in to my liking.

Just when I was thinking Batiste was the bomb, I looked at the ingredients and wondered if it indeed was a bomb! The first three ingredients are butane, isobutane, and propane, which are aerosol propellants. What that in mind, keep Batiste dry shampoo away from heat, and use in a well ventilated area. Batiste uses rice starch to absorb the oil in your hair. Different brands of dry shampoos seem to use different kinds of starch, however the concept is pretty much the same: starch absorbs the oil that makes your hair look unclean.

Ingredients:  Butane, Isobutane, Propane, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Starch, Alcohol denat., Parfum (fragrance, Limonene, Linalool, Geraniol, Benzyl Benzoate, Distearyldimonium chloride, Cetrimonium Chloride

Overall, I enjoyed using Batiste Dry Shampoo. The Batiste dry shampoo is great for cleaning up the oil in my end-of-the day hair and giving it a hair-raising boost. I bet it will also come in handy for unseen hair emergencies, camping, and other situations where I just don't have the time or resources to wash. The spray form is quick and really easy to use in a pinch. It tends to be a little less messy than dry shampoos in powder form. (That said, I still do like powder-form shampoos since you can work more in, don't have to worry about chemical inhalants, and can travel with them. For me, it's worth having both spray and powder dry shampoo). I'm happy to have Batiste Dry Shampoo in my collection. It's so convenient and easy to use. I know I'll be reaching for it often. Have you tried Batiste products? Have you tried dry shampoo?

Love, Dovey.

    1. Well, on the other hand, I suppose if you're being filmed 24/7 I guess you have to have good hair :P Let me know if you give this a try!

    1. Hi Dani - I like this so far too. The spray is convenient! I'm curious as to what the other scents are like.

  3. I've only used one spray dry shampoo before and I'm so glad I'm almost through the bottle. I bought my first full sized dry shampoo yesterday, the powdery one. While it may be messy, I can't most definitely work with it more.

    1. Hi Nancy - I'm glad you mentioned that. I know a lot of people love the spray form since it's convenient, but I do find powder to me more workable too.

  4. I have problems finding a good dry shampoo, I have black hair and most are white (which can look like dandruff :/). why it is so hard to find a good dry shampoo *sigh*, will take a look at batiste because I am desperate, I tried everything from baby powder, tigi to phillip b, rene furterer, etc. Thank you for the review! BTW, can't wait for my Kiehl's SPF body ss (ordered yesterday), so curious about this one thanks to you :D

    1. Hi Claire, I know what you mean about the dandruff look. It's not ideal. I have to really work most dry shampoos into my hair to get them to blend in too. Even then there might be the slightest tinge of white. I find that it's easier to blend in when there's more oil accumulation, since it's being absorbed. Usually my hair produces enough to make that a non-issue. I hope you like the Kiehl's; let me know if it's a thumbs up or down!

  5. You got me with your opening line stating that JWoww is a fan. Girl, I didn't even think I would ever read that here - that's why you are so awesome.

    LOVING!!!

  6. The chemicals do look a bit scary plus it has alcohol too...i wonder if that would be bad for your scalp in the long run? but then if used moderately I don't really see it has an issue...because dry shampoo is meant to be an occasional thing right? haha... i don't know i guess it depends on the individual. So I think I would prefer to try a powder one. Any good brands to reccommened?

    1. Hi Beauty Box, I'm usually startled with chemical lists too. In Batiste's defense, the number of chemicals listed is pretty small for a hair product. I think the first three propellants just vaporize into the hair (as opposed to ending up on the head). Actually, this is why I like dry shampoos in general; they tend to have small ingredient lists since the product is essentially based on starch :) I think Batiste has a powder form available too as a matter of fact! The other dry shampoo (powder form) that I own is LUSH No Drought. I do like that one a lot too, and hope to review it soon

  7. I love a good dry shampoo but I wish they could make them in non-aerosol form. My problem with aerosols is that if the sprayer malfunctions you're out of luck with the rest of the product. True story- I had a *brand* new bottle of Treseme Dry Shampoo break on me after just two uses. My first bottle I was able to use to the last drop, my second bottle I was only able to half finish and this third bottle takes the cake at how much product is left. I may have to up the ante and buy a more expensive brand. I had a small size of one from Big Sexy Hair that I loved to pieces. It's about $12 and I think I may indulge in this one or that one depending on which I find first :)

    1. AH, I would be so upset if it broke so quickly on me. I think you're right about aerosols though. I've had hair products in aerosol refuse to dispense product after a while. It's worse than other product malfunctions since you can't really cut them open to dig the rest of the product out!

  8. Hi Dovey

Am planning to use dry shampoo for long term purposes and not wash my hair with water and regular shampoo for months, just wanted to know your quick view on this if this should be good for my hair

    1. Hi TCSWAFI, I think it's always better to wash and use dry shampoo in a pinch or between days! Eventually the dry shampoo will build up on your hair, over days of use.
