Inspired by a mermaid
It's that time of year when mermaid blues and greens start making their way into summer makeup. While in Hawaii, Mr. Lovey and I stopped by a Thai restaurant before a tour up the old volcano Mauna Kea (which at 13,796ft is the highest peak in Hawaii!) I saw a beautiful depiction of a mermaid (seen above). I loved how the colors differ from usual mermaids with murky teal blue, gold and coppery pinks.
To create a mermaid-inspired look I pulled out my NARS Dogon eyeshadow duo from last summer (reviewed here). NARS Dogon pairs a navy alongside a spectacular taupe with mermaid sheen. When combined, the two colors have a really cool multifaceted effect like the mermaid above.
I used the taupe of NARS Dogon on the lid and softly lined my eyes using the navy and a pencil brush. The blue-green sheen really adds summery dimension to an otherwise heavier eye. To finish the eye, I used my well loved NARS Larger Than Life eyeliner in Via Veneto (reviewed here) and MAC Zoom Fast Black Lash mascara. (MAC Zoom fast is growing on me). I kept the rest of the face simple and little peach-pink with my new Laura Geller Baked Blush in Bora Bora. I used Laura Geller Baked Body Frosting in Tahitian glow with a fluffy brush to get a light coppery glow on my face. I'm not normally a body makeup person, but I tried a little on my collarbones too for fun. For my nails, I chose the light pink polish NARS Vestale (reviewed here). I really enjoyed the mermaid tones in the resultant look!
Thanks for reading! Have you been incorporating mermaid or sea inspired colors into your makeup routine? Have you tried NARS Dogon? Thanks for reading!

I have both of those Laura Geller products and I love them!
ReplyDeleteHi Amanda, awesome! I've just started using mine and I like them so far.
Deletewow, the depiction is so beautiful, love your makeup choices, the colour go together perfectly <3
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Claire!
DeleteWhat a lovely post Dovey! I don't have any NARS products but this eyeshadow combo looks gorgeous :)
ReplyDeleteHi Vita, Thanks :) Dogon is one of my favorite duos!
DeleteI love Dogon and need to pull it out again. The Laura Geller Bora Bora looks beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThis is so pretty! You captured the colors/feel of the picture perfectly! I've never tried any laura gelled products, but these look great.
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried any Laura Geller products. Think I may try to recreate that eye look today with existing items. It sounds very pretty. I like the different approach to a 'mermaid' look!
ReplyDeleteOh, lovely! I agree that I like the unique coloring here, versus the usual teal and turquoise.
ReplyDeleteI love this! I think the unique depiction of this mermaid makes her all the more alluring. I dislike the day-glo turquoise so often associated with women/creatures that are meant to be alluring and mysterious. I'm all for your color scheme!

The mermaid is absolutely beautiful. Looove the coppery pink accents and the carving itself is so intricate and detailed. Especially the hair and her scales. The colors you picked out are great! Love the NARS duo.
ReplyDeleteLove the Thai mermaid, so pretty! I love this inspiration, so the opposite of an Ariel mermaid depiction. Recently, my Via Veneto liner dried out. It's so weird and I really don't know how it happened. The cap was on the whole time. It's weird!
ReplyDeleteLooks so pretty! I always love your art inspired posts. The color combinations are lovely! I really like Bora Bora, but haven't tried the body make up yet. I've been so busy these past few weeks, I haven't thought much about make up or my blog.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous inspiration! The colors you chose serve it well. These are my favorite posts that you do, Dovey! Keep up the amazing work, and good luck in the Allure competition- I was rooting for you the whole way!
ReplyDeleteI have not tried Dogon yet, but this article is so beautiful and compelling I might have to remedy that soon.
ReplyDeleteLove your inspired posts! I wouldn't have thought to use something dark like Dogon in reference to a mermaid but you really make it appealing. :)
ReplyDeleteI love these posts you do so much Dovey! Please never stop!
ReplyDeleteI need to pull out my Dogon palette now!
I love mermaid blues and greens during the summer! I really like the look of the Laura Geller Tahitian glow and Bora Bora blush :) Great post!
ReplyDeleteDogon is amazing, using the navy under the taupe is a wee bit heavy for my English colouring during the day so I save the combo for night. Sometimes I do a swipe of the taupe over a daytime grey shade to give me a boost. The taupe is a amazing and layered over matte shades gives them an interesting yet subtle lift.
